What is a good mp3 player brand?

I have a 2nd generation 2G iPod that has been through hell but is still working. I'm considering my choices: a cheaper mp3 and video player or another iPod 8G. I need to be able to run with it so Zune is out. I also heard this generation's iPod has lesser quality as far as battery goes but I LOVE the brand. HELP!!
